About VizThink VizThink is gathering visual thinkers from all corners of the world to create the first global community dedicated to the use of visualization in all forms of learning and communication.

VizThink was initially conceived by Dave Gray, Chairman of Xplane. A long time proponent of Visual Communication, Dave envisoned the creation of a global community of visual thinkers. In 2006 XPLANE expanded to Europe through a new office in Madrid, Spain. While in Europe Dave became acquainted with Rodolfo Carpintier of Digital Assets Deployment, a business incubator firm in Madrid.

Through their conversations the concept of VizThink was raised and Mr. Carpintier, who has a successful history of building organizations that revolve around community, was enthused by the idea and decided to fund it.

In July of 2007, after about six months of planning, VizThink was launched.

Booth's Corner Farmers Market was founded in the 1930's by a farmer named Earl Phillips. His 14 acre farm, complete with wooden barn and sprawling fields, served as the sale grounds for Amish farmers and other merchants who brought their goods by truck and wagon to the Market during the Great Depression.

Over the years, a series of sheds and outbuildings were added on to the barn to accommodate the growing numbers of merchants offering discounted national brand merchandise and a wide variety of farm fresh produce, poultry and meats.

On Friday nights, thousands of bargain hunters would head for the excitement of the "sale" as the famous auction was known in the early days.

Booth's Corner also attracted some of the country's most famous entertainers. Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson's famous sidekick, was once a colorful pitchman hawking gadgets in the Market midway. While Bill Haley, of Comets fame, was a popular guitar-playing entertainer.

The original market was destroyed by fire in 1973 and replaced by a modern building under the direction of Paul Cohen, whose father Nate, founded the original market.

Today, Booth's Corner Farmers Market upholds the tradition of great values and farm fresh meats and produce that have truly made it a great Delaware Valley landmark.

Getting some of the talent from both in the same room can make wonderful debate and produce incredibly engaging projects. Indy Hall Labs provides the perfect incubator for these relationships to blossom into killer products.

This discussion is intended to become a Rosetta Stone for both camps. Focus will be on how this relationship is cultivated. Designers will gain insight on interface and branding, communication, and limits of the medium. Developers will get a glimpse into the mind of a visual artist and how, with a bit of art direction, their app can look like a streamlined butterfly!

Howard Blumenthal, CEO, MiND TV

New Ideas for an Old Medium

Public television has a big problem -- each generation finds it less relevant than the one that came before it. In this presentation, Howard Blumenthal will discuss the recent transformation of WYBE, an 18-year-old independent public television station in Philadelphia, into MiND TV, a multi-platform learning channel featuring community-generated content. MiND strives to reduce the public television generation gap by encouraging and empowering anyone to produce digital video programs that will air regularly to a diverse audience on regional broadcast and cable television, as well as online at mindtv.org and other media-sharing sites. Blumenthal will also discuss the the impact of new technologies on the television industry, and the unique role small innovators often play to lead the way for positive change in any industry.

Biography
In 2006, Howard Blumenthal became the CEO of Independence Media, the non-profit organization which owns and operates the independent public television station WYBE (now MiND TV). Previously, he was the Senior VP of Marketing & Media at CDNow. Prior to CDNow, Blumenthal was the President and co-founder of Glow in the Dark Productions, a program supplier to cable networks. His television credits include the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, which he created and produced for PBS, and MTV's Remote Control. At Warner Communications, he initiated the development effort that became MTV, and headed interactive development for QUBE. He is also the author of more than 20 books about business, marketing, creativity, history, music, and media. For 15 years, he wrote a syndicated column for more than 100 newspapers about consumer technology. He has been a faculty member at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, and New School University.

Symfony: a Rails-like, agile web development framework for PHP

Web site development takes time. Most developers have heard about the benefits of Ruby on Rails, a development framework famous for its ability to speed the completion of a web site by anticipating common needs and minimizing busywork. But since Rails is written in Ruby rather than a more common language like PHP, Rails requires special programming skills and a separate infrastructure. The Symfony framework offers similar benefits for developers who prefer the popular PHP programming language. This half-hour presentation will focus on the features and benefits of Symfony, including an examination of a web site of local interest developed within the Symfony framework.

Bio:
Tom Boutell is a web developer with P'unk Avenue, a Philly-based design firm with deep community roots. In years past he edited the original WWW FAQ, developed the 1.0 release of RealNetworks' RealAudio system and coded the "gd" graphics library used to generate graphics on the fly in many web sites. Since joining P'unk he has become an advocate of Symfony, a web application framework for PHP developers that draws inspiration from Ruby on Rails.

Phil Charron has been consulting with Fortune 1000 companies in Experience Design, Instructional Technology, Simulation Design, Non-linear Scriptwriting and Media Production since 1993.

Currently, Phil is an Experience Design Director for Think Brownstone and is also an Adjunct Faculty member for Philadelphia University’s Masters of Instructional Technology and Masters of Digital Design Programs.

His projects have won several awards, including the Brandon Hall Awards, New Media Invision Awards, the New York Festivals, HR Executive’s Top 10 Products, Dogfish Head Short Film Competition, and the 48-hour Film Festival.

Phil is also a regular contributor to the ThinkBlog and is one of the founding members of the Philadelphia-based Short Film Collective The After School Specialists.

RUSS STARKE
Russ Starke is an Experience Design Director at Think Brownstone. Originally from Long Island NY, his professional career began in 1997 when he moved to Philadelphia and began consulting in the fields of Instructional Technology, Information Architecture, Multimedia Production, and Project Management.

Russ is also an Adjunct Faculty member for Phladelphia University’s Masters of Instructional Technology Program (Design and Development of Computer Based Instruction I & II) and Masters of Digital Design Program (Digital Audio Production).

He is the audio engineer and on-air talent for the companion podcast to UsedWigs.com, a contributing writer on UsedWigs and on the ThinkBlog, one of the founding partners of the songwriting/music recording collective MATTOWAX, and is the resident composer and sound designer for the Philadelphia-based Short Film Collective The After School Specialists.

By 2011, one-half of all online adults and 84 percent of online teens in the U.S. will use social networking each month," We will review the basics of two Social Networking sites. Open social (Orkut) and Facebook API's are the way programmers can create custom applications that a socially aware. Microsoft has sponsored a toolkit to add to visual studio that allows easy access to the Facebook api REST programming model. We will review basic development process and create a simple app to show how to access friend data and install an app in the Facebook directory. As an added bonus Andy Schwam will give us a sneak peak at a new start up that promises to kick the doors in on this space.

Jim Kane, a Solutions Manager at Unisys, will present a case study on the Unisys deployment of SharePoint/MOSS. Unisys originally deployed SharePoint 2003 as one of the earliest and largest deployments in North America, supporting 34,000 users globally. Unisys is just completing migration of their deployment, including over 1 terabyte of data and 14 portals, from SharePoint 2003 to MOSS 2007. Philly ALT.NET Meeting 2007_11_14

The first meeting will focused on the C# open source Castle Project library, and it's MVC framework called Monorail. Monorail is an alternative to the Microsoft Web Forms model, ASP.NET and provides some distinct advantages to working with Web Forms. Monorail's growing popularity was one of the key factors in Microsoft's recent decision to develop their own MVC alternative to Web Forms, which we'll also discuss. The Castle Project also provides many other great tools that can be used separately from Monorail in all types of .NET development, whether ASP.NET, Winforms, etcThe meeting went very well and the presention was on target This was a great kick off to this new group. Very cool technology this really brings the Java and .net world in line with MVC.

As most of you know my daughter's mother in law died of Pancreatic Cancer earlier this year.

It turns out there is not a lot of research money spent on this deadly form of cancer.

Millions of patients have already been helped by public and private patient assistance programs, but we know that millions more could benefit. That's why the Partnership for Prescription Assistance launched the “Help Is Here Express” bus tour. The “Help is Here Express” is a traveling enrollment center that travels across the country to increase awareness of and boost enrollment in patient assistance programs.
The bus is equipped with computer terminals and mobile telephones so patients can find out on the bus if they are eligible for help paying for their medicines. In the coming months, the bus will visit states across the country, increasing awareness and enrolling people in programs that help them receive the medicines they need.
The “Help Is Here Express” makes stops at state fairs, health clinics, senior centers and community events

Had a great time tonight went to the Halo3 Prelaunch event in the big apple tonight.

A small group from the Phillydotnet.org user community drive up in rush hour to have an exclusive first hands on experience with the newest version of the Halo franchise. Thanks goes out to Dani Diaz from Microsoft

There was a tournament and two of our crew won. Ryan won first place and Matt came in third. Way to go Guys!!!

2007 Girls Del Val Softball Norwood PA Tournament July 20-22

The Bethel Township Tournament Team won the Championship Game against undefeated, Highland Park on Sunday July 22, 2007. The tournament had 6 teams competing for the Championship during the three days. On Sunday, the two final teams, Highland Park and Bethel Township battled each other in two final games for five hours. The first game went into two extra innings as each team could not brake the tie score, International Rules were applied to help brake the tie, but it made no difference to Bethel. In the end, Bethel Township broke the tie by 1 run and won the game. They moved onto the Final Championship Game which ended in five innings with a score of 15 to 2. Bethel Township Team was the first to ever win the Del Val Championship in the league history. The Runner-ups got a plaque and so did the Champions.
Great job to all the members of the team, the coaches and parents.
